Community Calendar — June 2019

Here's what's happening across our school this month...

  • An evening encore of May 21st's STEAM Expo takes place June 13th at approximately 6:00 pm. Parents, administrators, the press, and possibly other schools, will be present at our larger event.

  • Finals week starts June 7th, with a schedule similar to January's Midterms week. Students will be banned from the building starting on June 14th, unless they need to take a NYS Regents Exam or a final exam.

  • We know the 8th grade has a promotion/graduation ceremony, with more information on the way. It's going to be a big show, just like their other big send-off events, because there's a big change coming to the building soon. Some of the awards traditionally presented at the promotion/graduation ceremony were included in the End-of-Year Awards Ceremony a few days ago, so it waits to be seen. We wish them well.

  • Gym construction has been finished for at least a week, but there's still more work to be done. So, a trailer is out on the field as the workers fix up the roof over the summer. By summer's end, some of the hallways will look better than ever as the building continues its historic & intense renovation.

  • Flag Day is June 14th, the day the U.S. Congress adopted the pattern of a blue rectangle, white stars, and red and white stripes on June 14th, 1777. It's not an official federal holiday, but Title 36 of the U.S. Code, Subtitle I, Part A, Chapter 1, § (Paragraph) 10 is the law noting the observance of Flag Day. It is the President's discretion to proclaim the day, but it's generally been done by all presidents. New York State law designates the second Sunday of June (June 9th) as Flag Day as a state holiday. The 50-state version was created by 17-year old Robert G. Heft as a school project. He got a B-, but his teacher said if Congress approved his version, the grade would be better. President Eisenhower made Heft's flag the official version now used for 58 years on Independence Day 1960. Heft got an A from his teacher's promise.

  • Father's Day is also a big day, with the third Sunday of June. In 2019, that date is June 16th.
