(MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. / The Journal) — NPR member station WNYC, which serves the New York City metro area, will air "Richard II" in partnership with The Public Theater this week, repurposing the annual Manhattan summer tradition of "Free Shakespeare in the Park" at Central Park into "Free Shakespeare on the Radio". The classic play, directed by Saheem Ali, will be aired locally in the New York area on WNYC-FM 93.9 and WNYC-AM 820 as well as nationally on wnyc.org with nightly one-hour episodes at 8:00pm Eastern from Monday, July 13 to Thursday, July 16. Additionally, each episode will be part of a podcast that can be played again after it airs. Like many work-from-home scenarios during the COVID-19 novel coronavirus pandemic, the entire production was pre-recorded on a conference call in early June at the start of the Black Lives Matter protests across America.

The play's cast of 26 members, led by André Holland, includes many BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), including local resident and famed actress of stage and screen, Phylicia Rashad, who was recently recognized by the Mount Vernon City School District as a powerful force in the arts and the new namesake of the 1,685-seat Phylicia Rashad Auditorium at the Nellie A. Thornton High School of Performing and Visual Arts which was renamed at a arts fundraising ceremony honoring Ms. Rashad last October. Rashad plays the Duchess of Gloucester.

The story of "Richard II" closely mirrors the times of today with society reeling after a murder and what happens next. The cast and The Public Theater dedicated this production to the Black Lives Matter movement, supporting many local and national advocacy groups.
