UPDATE (01/01/2020): Mount Vernon Mayor-Elect Shawyn Patterson-Howard was sworn in during a private ceremony at Saint Paul's Church National Historic Site. The Oath of Office was administered to Patterson-Howard by City Court Judge Nichelle Johnson, with her husband, Marvin Howard, by her side.

(MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. / The Journal) — With the arrival of a new year, Shawyn Patterson-Howard, the first woman elected mayor and first woman of color elected mayor in Mount Vernon history as well as the first woman of color elected mayor in Westchester County history, will be inaugurated in a ceremony at Nellie A. Thornton High School and Performing and Visual Arts Magnet Program on Saturday, January 5th, 2020 at 1:00 pm.

During the Democratic primary election in June, Patterson-Howard won by a landslide of votes against Richard Thomas and André Wallace, her two predecessors at City Hall. During the mayoral election in November, she also won by a landslide against André Wallace (who got in as a Republican) and the Conservative Party's Rosemarie Jarosz. After a year full of confusing politics in City Hall and so-called "musical chairs" in the Mayor's Office, Patterson-Howard laid out on her website that she would be transparent in her campaign finances as well as being civil and honest.

1,500 people are expected to attend the ceremony, which is being held at a location very special to Patterson-Howard. Mount Vernon teacher Nellie A. Thornton, the school's namesake, was her godmother and mentor. Thornton is still cherished throughout the city for her contributions to the local community.

Attending dignitaries include Westchester's representatives in Washington, DC, Mount Vernon's representatives in Albany, and more New York State officials. Representative Eliot Engel (Democrat, House District NY-16), who is chairman of the House of Representatives' Foreign Affairs Committee and Senator Charles "Chuck" E. Schumer (D, New York), who is the Senate Minority Leader, will attend, as well as Westchester County Executive (D) George Latimer, New York State Assemblymember J. Gary Pretlow (D, 89th Assembly District), New York State Senator Jamaal T. Bailey (D, 36th Senate District), New York State Senator Alessandra Biaggi (D, 34th Senate District), New York State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D, 35th Senate District), who is also State Senate Majority Leader and New York State Assemblymember Carl E. Heastie (D, 83rd Assembly District), who is also Speaker of the State Assembly.
