(MOUNT VERNON, NY / The Journal) — The New York State Education Department (NYSED) has announced that regional meetings across the state will happen to "gather feedback on what a state diploma should signify to ensure educational excellence and equity for every student in New York State", as stated in a recent press release from last week.

Members of NYSED's Board of Regents as well as Superintendents and other representatives of the local regions' BOCES (Boards of Cooperative Educational Services) and representatives from the Conference of Big 5 School Districts in New York State will organize and/or preside over these meetings with the communities as the NYSED's current Graduation Measures are under review. Members of the public as well as educational stakeholders may attend any of these meetings. At least one meeting will happen in each of the State's Judicial Districts (there are 12 in total) through April. The Mount Vernon City School District (MVCSD) is in the fourth Judicial District, which is comprised of Dutchess, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, and Westchester Counties.

This comes when according to the NYSED's official website for data and statistics, data.nysed.gov, the MVCSD's high school graduation rates have, on average, risen over two percent from the 2012-2013 school year to the 2018-2019 school year. Logically, this also includes the 2013-2014, 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017, and 2017-2018 school years as well. Despite its growth (and some shortcomings of it), as of the 2018-2019 school year, the MVCSD is still well behind of the statewide high school graduation rate of 83%, resulting in a difference of 13 percentage points.
